Gangster Movie Lighting
About a week ago I picked up a pair of strobes; a 580EX II and a 430EX II. Then I met a shooting buddy who wanted to learn what being a stobist was all about. I figured we could learn together so he popped over to test out the lights.
This is hard to do. I didn't want to use my mono lights (which provide a good pair of modelling lights to work with), so we had to shoot and chimp and shoot and chimp until we got the hot-shoe lights exactly how we wanted them.
Since I was using hot-shoe lights I wanted to try B&W and have a go at nailing down the old gangster movie style of lighting.
This one was converted to B&W with a blue filter and just a touch of sharpening.
I can see what the attraction is to B&W shooting and I think I now have the bug.
I'm pretty much new to doing any kind of portrait work and brand new at being a stobist so any regular people shooters out there please feel free to giving me a critique and send me any tips to get me going.
