Kraków - Kazimierz ✡

Judaism

Szeroka Street in Kazimierz, a former Jewish Quarter of Kraków.

Once a separate town, Kazimierz was founded in 1335 by King Casimirus the Great (Kazimierz Wielki), and as its splendid churches and synagogues evoke, it was once a world of prosperity and tolerance. Two nations and two great religions existed here for centuries in relative harmony. It is in Kazimierz that the massive, Gothic churches of St Catherine's and Corpus Christi sprung up alongside synagogues.
In 1791, Kazimierz lost its status as a separate city and became a district of Krakow. By the 1930s, Krakow had 120 officially registered synagogues and prayer houses scattered across the city and much of Jewish intellectual life had moved to new centers like Podgórze.
Krakow was one of the largest Jewish centers in Poland/Galicia. In 1938, Krakow's Jewish population numbered over 60,000 (about 25% of the city's total population). The death-knell for Jewish Kraków was sounded in September 1939 with the German invasion. A whole world was swept away; only 2,000 Jews from Kraków survived the war.
